Legacy Health Strategies’ co-founder and Chief Patient Officer, former National Football League (NFL) player Rolf Benirschke,* is involved in this engagement.

Benirschke, who is an ostomate, was a place-kicker for the San Diego Chargers from 1977 to 1986. During his second season with the team, he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, an intestinal illness that required major surgery and nearly cost him his life. He persevered through recovery, adjusted to life as an ostomate, and returned to the NFL to complete a successful career. Before retiring, he received numerous honors including The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year and NFL Comeback Player of the Year.

Benirschke’s illness inspired him to become a patient advocate for ostomates. “Rolf is a well-respected and passionate voice for people living with ostomies. B.
