Widespread use of safety-engineered sharps devices, targeted education efforts and enforcement backed by the Federal Needlestick Safety & Prevention Act have helped reduce sharps injuries for healthcare workers by about a third, on average, since passage of the Act in 2000. Less progress has been seen in certain areas, for example, needlestick rates in operating rooms have eluded significant progress. Outpatient settings cause concern as well.
