Product and packaging design
There are many factors to consider when developing a new product. At B. Braun, safety for the patient, clinician and environment always comes first. We've never manufactured our IV containers with DEHP or PVC because it's the right thing to do. We look for the same commitment from our partners and suppliers.
When we use less plastic in our packaging, our customers use less plastic too. Reducing the size of our packaging not only supports the environment but helps our customers with storage and distribution. Products such as EXCEL® Plus IV Containers weigh less than similar products, thereby adding less waste to landfills.1 Our employees play their own roles in reducing plastic usage. The employee-led “Green Team” has helped to lower plastic bag usage, among other initiatives.
At B. Braun, we consistently look for ways to avoid harm to the environment while protecting patient safety. By choosing products not made with DEHP, you can help eliminate the use of toxic chemicals that could potentially affect your patients, your staff and the environment. B. Braun is the only supplier offering a full line of IV solution and irrigation containers not made with DEHP or PVC.
When it comes to recycling, we let design lead the way. Our packaging development teams around the world use paper-based materials, rigid and flexible plastics, metals and glass when designing with recycling in mind. We look at the whole life cycle of the packaging – from its purpose to its impact on the environment.
When we talk about the life cycle of a product, that extends to the individual materials we get from external suppliers. For example, we use 100 percent recycled paper obtained from an outside source in some of our product packaging. This one step results in water, tree and power conservation and less waste heading to landfills.
