On August 26, 2024, the California State Senate passed AB2300, the Toxic Free Medical Devices Act, by a vote of 39 to 0. This action follows approval of the legislation by the California Assembly in May by a vote of 58-1.
B. Braun is proud to support this important patient safety legislation which would phase out the use of Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) in IV bags and tubing, helping ensure that millions of patients across California are not exposed to this harmful chemical when receiving IV therapy.
As the first medical device manufacturer to remove DEHP and PVC from many of our products and the only supplier offering a full line of IV drug, nutrition, solution and irrigation containers plus a robust line of IV sets/connectors not made with DEHP or PVC, B. Braun is pleased that California is taking this action to protect patients and the environment.
We would like to thank the sponsors of AB2300, Assemblywoman Lori Wilson and State Senator Dave Min, for leading the effort to pass this groundbreaking legislation. We also want to recognize and congratulate Breast Cancer Prevention Partners, California Black Health Network and the American College of OB/GYN District 9 for raising awareness of this issue and their strong advocacy throughout the legislative process.
At B. Braun, we believe no one should ever need to worry if the IV bag and tubing being used to treat themselves or a loved one could put their health at risk. We look forward to this legislation being signed into law and implemented as early as possible.
